How Many Smokers Quit Each Year in Canada Using Vape?

Tobacco remains the prevalent cause of diseases and death in Canada, where an estimated 48,000 Canadians die every year due to smoking. One cigarette contains 7000 chemicals, some of which are linked to cancer. Smoking kills half of those people who don't quit – while quitting smoking is difficult, it is not impossible.

Many Canadians use vaping products as an alternative to smoking as it delivers nicotine in a less harmful way. Some evidence suggests that using vapes is linked to improved success rates as it reduces exposure to several toxic and cancer-causing chemicals.

The Devastating Effects of Smoking

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, the health risks linked to smoking are undeniable. Smoking causes at least 16 different types of cancer – where half of all smokers die of smoking-related illnesses. Smokers are often worried about quitting due to the devastating withdrawal symptoms. It has been estimated that about 72% of lung cancer cases are due to smoking tobacco in Canada.

Research has suggested that vaping can be 95% less harmful than smoking – for someone looking to cease smoking, minimizing the harm is a step forward towards quitting.

Using Vaping Products to Quit Smoking – What Evidence Suggests

A recent survey led in 2017 conducted telephone interviews with 16,349 respondents across all 10 Canadian provinces. Approximately 16% of Canadians (4 million) aged 25 years and older reported that they smoke daily. Among Canadians who vaped in the past 30 days, 65% were current smokers, and 20% were former smokers. However, the most commonly stated reasons for using e-cigarettes or vapes were to help quit smoking. Nearly one-quarter (23.6%) informed vaping helped them quit smoking within the past two years. Similar results were attained from the 2020 survey.

The federal government passed Bill S-5 in May 2018, the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act (TVPA), to deliver the legal framework to regulate Canada's production, sale, labelling, and advertisement of nicotine-containing vaping products. It emphasized allowing adults access to vaping products as a less harmful alternative to smoking.

By replacing cigarette smoking with vaping, you can reduce exposure to harmful chemicals. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, if you're a smoker who has tried quitting but failed, vapes can be a healthier alternative to help you stay off smoking. Research suggests that in order to get relative health benefits of e-cigarettes or vapes, you should stop smoking conventional cigarettes completely.

The Rise of Vaping Among Canadians – An Alternate to Smoking

E-cigarettes and vaping products were first introduced in 2004 in Canada. Still, the representation of the 2018 Tobacco and Vaping Products Act (TVPA) and tempting e-flavours catapulted the product to new heights on the market. The TVPA became law in 2018, allowing adults to purchase vape products legally containing nicotine. According to Health Canada, the maximum amount of nicotine content allowed in vapes in Canada is 20 mg/ml.

Vaping is becoming increasingly popular among Canadians as the number of young people who smoked decreased to 7.4 percent in 2019 from 11.9 per cent in 2017. According to Dr. Robert Schwartz, senior scientist at Toronto's Center for Addiction and Mental health, cigarettes were the most effective consuming nicotine, but vapes have replaced them. Vaping devices, such as STLTH pods and Allo SYNC, have mimicked conventional cigarettes' feeling on the throat – in the same way as cigarettes do.

Beginner's Guide to Vaping – Make Your Transition Smooth

There are a few things you need to consider if you are looking to switch from smoking to vaping. The right nicotine content in e-liquids depends on your smoking habits, making the transition easier. If you smoke ten cigarettes per day, you will need lower ranges of nicotine strength to make the transition easy. If you smoke one pack of cigarettes a day, a higher nicotine level would be required.

Nicotine Types

There are two types of nicotine. Freebase nicotine is the most common nicotine used in vapes and is a good option for vapers who are not accustomed to specific vaping styles. On the other hand, Nicotine salts are ideal for vapers looking for a little more discreet cloud production and a good nicotine kick. Vaping gives you full control of your nicotine intake as e-liquids are available in various nicotine strengths, helping you quit smoking habits.

Vape Kits

There are three types of vape kits: pod vapes, pen vapes, and box vapes. Pod vapes have the most basic design and are perfect for beginners thinking to switch from smoking. A popular choice among Canadians new to vaping is a closed pod system, consisting of a battery and pre-filled cartridge. With each pre-filled pod, you save yourself the hassle of pouring e-liquids into the atomizer. These pod systems come in a range of flavours, including fruits, menthol, tobacco, and various nicotine strengths to make the transition from smoking easier.

E-Liquids

There are hundreds of e-liquids to choose from, available in numerous flavours and brands. Historically vapers would start with tobacco or menthol flavours to get the taste and feel of a cigarette. However, more and more smokers in Canada begin with fruity or dessert flavours, including apple crisp, blue raspberry, and more.

Quitting Smoking? Vaping is the Way to Go!

Vaping is demonstrated to be less harmful than smoking by numerous public health authorities worldwide – making it clear that vaping is an effective way for smokers to quit smoking. More and more smokers in Canada are switching from traditional cigarettes to vaping products for a healthier alternative. Smoking cessation is often associated with extreme nicotine withdrawal symptoms, resulting in stress, restlessness, and more.

Vaping offers just the nicotine content you need to make smoking cessation easier. With time, you can change the nicotine strengths without experiencing the withdrawal symptoms. Numerous studies have suggested that people who transitioned to vaping ceased smoking within a year.
